When the Southeastern Library Network, SOLINET, wanted to announce it was going green and moving to a stronger web presence and less print, they sent out a postcard made of recycled paper containing flower seeds. I'll be planting this paper in a flower pot and enjoying the resulting flowers all summer long! What a great idea! I wish all my bulk mail had flower seeds!

I think its usually referred to as "seed paper" or "plantable paper"

At Carrowinds we saw a vendor selling french fries by the pound. This started a long conversation where we speculated what you would weigh if you ate a pound of fries. Of course, my friend Rob actually followed up and came up with the calculations below:

"So, a pound of fries is about 453 grams of fries. Best I can tell that works out to something like:

1551 calories
747 calories from fat
83 grams of fat (127% daily value)
17.5 grams saturated fat (85% daily value)
179 grams of carbs (55% daily value)
890 grams sodium (37% daily value)
16 grams dietary fiber (64% daily value)
19.6 grams protein
85 % daily allowance of vitamin C

Now if I weighed myself just after eating a pound of fries, I'd weigh just a pound more. But as soon as I digested the food, I'd end up with 1551 calories to burn. I think the recommended average caloric intake is about 2500 calories (I read somewhere the average actual is like 3900 which seems insane but I guess that's why everyone is so fat), so I'd have just under 1000 for the rest of the day, during which I'd really need to somehow eat negative 17.6 grams of fat."

Wake Forest University wants to sell a massive, 360-degree painting of the Battle of Gettysburg.

All the buyer needs is a few million dollars and a place to keep a 376-foot-long and 22-foot-high work created in 1883.

"We want it going somewhere where it will be taken care of properly and displayed properly," said university spokesman Kevin Cox. "The painting and everything that would be involved is big."

Where to start?! Hmm, well, today a student put a DVD in the DVD player in the ITC Screening room that was broken in half and taped back together. It immediately separated and fell apart in the player. I had the joy of taking the DVD player apart and removing the two halves.

First, How do you "accidently" break and DVD in half? Second, who puts a DVD in a player that has been repaired with Scotch tape?

Sometimes I think we have put up too many safety rails in the world and that we are impeding natural selection.
